Supermarket S.M.A.R.T.S. Program

Finally, a program with substance and sizzle. Attending a typical seminar takes an hour or two. Attending an educational experience with the intent of listening, understanding, and applying the material later requires much more time.

HLP has designed an educational experience that spans three days and promises a lasting benefit for those attending and their respective companies. Each of the three days will have its own theme.

Day 1 focuses on growing store sales. We will review old, reliable techniques as well as to showcase new ideas from around the world. For example, did you know most successful companies with positive comp sales share their average dollar transaction numbers with their associates? “Motivation by targeting” is what we call it. Average and below par companies are afraid to share the numbers citing confidentiality. Truth of the matter is that the potato chip vendor knows more about a store’s sales figures than most assistant managers. The idea of how to share the appropriate numbers with your staff in order to challenge them and achieve your goals is one of the 30 sales building ideas you will learn at Supermarket S.M.A.R.T.S.

Day 2 is designed to help you understand the economics of our business better and to prevent losses and reduce shrink. For example, did you know more than half of department managers cannot pass a basic test computing gross margins? They are simply unfamiliar with the myriad causes of an anemic gross margin. How can the quarterback win the game offensively if he can’t read a defense? How can a department manager run a profitable department without knowing all the causes of shrink? During our second day, we will arm all attendees with the tools to learn and teach the economics of a supermarket.

Day 3 is designed to improve our ability to lead others. Did you know the most important day of the year in the life of any associate is their performance review day? Yet, as an industry, we are woefully ill-prepared to conduct a truly meaningful review. We wing it, cheat it, and/or blow through it. Successful operators give the performance review function the attention and training it warrants.

Day 3 of our program will address this critically important management function as well as numerous others. As a leader of others, you will end this day a more capable leader for tomorrow.

A Supermarket S.M.A.R.T.S. experience will be three of the best days in your retail career. That is our goal and our promise to you.
